Fifty Shades of Whacked

NOTE: Mature subject matter. Because the world is full of twisted people.

OK – so I hear about this book, Fifty Shades of Porn that all the hip cool moms are reading. I hear about it from a post of a 20 something Christian blogger who writes about purity for young women. She’s shocked that a bunch of self-professing Christian women are reading it.
Then a longtime friend, former church member tells me that her former BIBLE STUDY LEADER recommended Fifty Shades of Shackles to her.
I’m having a cow…sideways.
My first thought was “I’ll put write down a bunch of Scripture to detail how God Himself explicitly forbids this kind of stuff!” But then I don’t think the women who are reading it really care at all what God thinks. Or they don’t think about what God thinks of it.
Just in case you’re wondering – here is just one verse on what God says:
Eph. 5:3 “Among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality…” And yes, reading a book on sadomasochism and bondage to become sexually aroused would be more than a hint – maybe a screaming neon sign of sexual immorality. It’s also bizarre. In a Fifty Shades of Deviancy way.
So I thought, why would God say this? Maybe I should right a “10 Reasons Fifty Shades of Duct Tape is a Bad Idea for a Summer Read.” So that’s what I’ll do. Here we go.
1. It’s porn for women. Which is really stupid. Because porn hurts women and children. It’s primarily men who become porn addicts. Mostly men casting off wives and kids and risking it all to get what they can. This is what Women’s Lib has brought us? Equal opportunity relational destruction?
Don’t believe me? Read this article – the guy doesn’t claim to be a Christian or care what God thinks. He’s just a regular guy not caught up in the hype. One Man’s Review: It’s All Porn To Me
2. It’s about sadomasochism and bondage. That means it’s about:
a. one person who is aroused by dominating, abusing, degrading and hurting another, and
b. another person is aroused by being dominated and abused, degraded and hurt by another.
Read those last two sentences slowly. Let that sink in. It should mortify and horrify you. It’s what turns on pedophiles, rapists and sick sick men who kidnap women and keep them chained up in the basement. It’s what turns on men who kidnap young girls in India and sell them into slavery. It’s what this woman experienced in real life – not a turn on: One Woman Trapped in Slavery
Annnnnddddd…it’s what housewives are reading and praising. It should make you fear what’s coming for the next generation.
3. It’s not “harmless” fun. “Researchers have found that when you lose yourself in a work of fiction, your behavior and thoughts can metamorphose to match those of your favorite character, according to the study published early online in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.” Beautiful. A bunch of women desiring to be degraded and a whole new breed of men who think women want to be debased. You Are What You Read, One Study Suggests
4. Like the Twilight series, its romance for stupid people. Quote from the Anastasia – the woman in the book, to her abuser (named “Christian” – odd choice for a name). She says “The physical pain you inflicted was not as bad as the pain of losing you.”
That quote (which I retrieved from an article – I haven’t read the book, just lots of reviews) is the kind of things women say right before they end up in the hospital or a battered women shelter. It’s painful and sick – not “sinfully wicked fiction.”
OK – I can’t go to ten. Let’s stop at four. Four reasons that Fifty Shades of Shame is horribly degrading and debasing for women. Four reasons Fifty Shades of Whips completely violates Christ’s plan.
This book…bad plan.

But test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. I Thess. 5:21-22
