I love rescuers. The biggest heroes on 9/11 were the firefighters and the policemen. While everyone was running FROM the destruction, the rescuers were running INTO the destruction…hoping to rescue.
Seal Team 6 – rescued an American doctor last week – one member even giving his life for the rescue. That’s a hero. US military men armed to teeth are heroes.

We have our pop stars and our boy bands & movies stars but when push comes to shove, when the rubber meets the road, we know those guys are cotton candy and fluff that need to be pushed aside so the grown ups can do the heavy lifting – the real blood and guts guys and gals who drag people from fires and wreckage and fight off terrorists.
Rescuers are the real deal. And guess what? The child is a rescuer.
Luke 2:21 says And at the end of eight days, when He was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
Jesus wasn’t a new name. It’s the Greek version of the Hebrew name Joshua – book #6 in the Old Testament – Joshua was a ferocious warrior – his name means, and Jesus means “Yahweh is salvation” or “Yahweh is my rescue.”
Jesus – the rescuer means you don’t have to go to hell and pay for your sins yourself bc Jesus did it on the cross. You don’t have to be separated from God for all of eternity. Christmas is like the kick off, the market opening. It means the rescuer is on the scene! Jesus is in the house!
Luke 2:25, 27b-28
Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. … When the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the Law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God.
Simeon was a seasoned citizen – pretty old. He’s seen a lot of years come and go. You think you’ve seen a lot. You have probably not experienced what Simeon did.
When Simeon was a boy, the Roman storm troopers plunged into Israel and took it captive. The Roman general Pompey, laid siege to the temple area of Jerusalem for 3 months, massacred the priests and entered the holy of holies in the temple. We’ve never experienced anything like that. It would be like jihdists coming into every Katy church and massacring all the pastors and then ruling over Katy. That’s what the Romans did when Simeon was a boy.
He grew up under Roman rule, saw bloody destruction in his homeland…but Simeon still had hope. B/c God had promised Simeon that he wouldn’t die until he saw the rescuer of Israel.
When Joseph and Mary walk up with Jesus, the Holy Spirit reveals to him that this is Christ – and he is overjoyed – he’s had 50 or 65 years of bad news – bad news – and after waiting year after year after year until finally – Good News! The rescuer is here!!
The child is the Rescuer. Many who read this can tell stories of being in the depths of despair and their life being rescued from a train wreck. One friend told me about laying in bed, after 20 years of alcoholism, no hope, and praying to God, “kill me now, or deliver me.” Have you ever prayed a prayer like that? Have you ever been so low that death would be a relief? “Kill me now, or deliver me.”
He woke up the next morning. The desire for alcohol had disappeared completely. He said he had a song in his heart and he realized he had been praising God all night long. The Rescuer had delivered him.
You might be in that place right now where you’d say “I’m hanging on by a thread and the thread is about to break…”
Good News! The Rescuer has come! Christ is here – and ready to rescue you. The Bible says all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Good News.
And this rescuer isn’t about just saving your for the day -truth is – its one thing to make it through another day on this earth – but you’re going to be dead a lot longer than your gonna be alive – so you need a rescuer who has some long term viability – you need a rescuer who carry you from this life to the next.
The Good News is this – the child is a rescuer – come to rescue men and women and children, rescue them from destruction and hell and then carry them from this life to the next.
The child is a rescuer.
