A Scary Thought – You’re Not Enough

Banned Phrase: God will never give you more than you can bear.

When someone is suffering, they are told “God will never give you more than you can bear.”

FALSE. WRONG. INCORRECT. RIDICULOUS (trust me – this is good – you’ll be glad it’s wrong).

Funny that people can say this phrase with a straight face. Do they live on planet earth? Or some silly fantasy world of Lucky Charms and unicorns? Because in THIS world really bad stuff happens. All the time. Unspeakable violence, torture and mayhem. This life can be poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

{This statement is true in regards to temptation (1 Cor. 10:13), but
is most often quoted in regards to suffering and the trials of life.}

And I see some of what goes on in this world and think “I could NEVER bear that! How horrifying!”

But maybe, David, bad stuff just happens to really horrible people. Is that it? Maybe the truly bad happens to really evil people that had it coming. That’s it, right? So the escape is to become a Christian and then none of the truly horrific terror will happen to you. Right? No. You’d be wrong.

Right in the Bible, in Hebrews 11:36-38, it says that faithful Christians were mocked, whipped, imprisoned, impaled by swords, even sawn in two.

Honestly, I think I could handle the sword. If it’s quick. But sawn into, or in two, or into two? That’s devastating! Horrifying! I cannot envision me EVER being able to bear that.

What about you? Could you bear all the stuff of real life horror that’s taking place in the world right now? Or do you say, like so many “I can’t even think about that. It scares me too much”?

“God will never give you more than you can bear”. Rubbish. And God doesn’t promise that.

THE TRUTH

There will be things in life that you can NEVER bear. Things that have to pass through the hand of God to get to you. And this is a favorite tool in His tool box to wake us up to reality. Reality being that we are “utterly and completely dependent on God”.

 You’re not enough.

That is reality. We don’t create ourselves. We don’t grow ourselves. We don’t make ourselves be born. We are completely dependent on the Giver of life. And then we don’t maintain our heartbeat, or our breathing. We THINK we keep us going. But every day people full of life…get this…stop living. Bam. Just like that. No rhyme. No reason. Dead. Even though they were in great shape. We are truly dependent on God for the very. next. breath. and. heartbeat.

NEVER FEAR. GOD IS HERE.

This dependence is such tremendous, wonderful news! Every time you see something horrible in the world and think…

“Oh, I could never make it if that happened to me”,
you can add to that phrase these wonderful words:

“but I don’t have to make it.”

You don’t have to make it, because of Jesus. He said “In this world you will have trials, tribulation, trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world”.

You’re not enough.
But Jesus is.
Jesus doesn’t expect you to bear it on your own. He’s overcome it. And He sent His Spirit to comfort, carry, console and strengthen, so that in that in YOUR day of trouble, HE will bear it for you.

Whatever you see in this world, never fear. He is able to bear it.

God WILL give you more than you can bear.
You’re not enough.
But Jesus is, in every situation.
So sleep well.

Blessings,

Pastor David

  1. I can't even tell you how I found this blog or ever express what it means to my family right now. We are going through a huge trial in our lives and I don't see an end in sight anytime soon. I catch myself saying “How can I bear this?” But I am putting my faith in the One who has already taken on suffering for me. I beleive that God will walk with my family until we see this through to the end…and even after that. Because His word is true, he'll never leave or forsake us. Thank you for this post. I beleive (among others I'm sure)it was meant for me. God Bless you.
