God Woke Me Up

God has shared a powerful truth with me. It’s called “perspective.”

He shared it through a close brother- I consider him my Jonathan, or he’s my David. Whichever. But today we’ll call him Jonathan in this post so as not to confuse him with me (Son of Saul – Jonathan was David’s best friend and defender).

We have a standing weekly meeting. He’s been through some of the most horrific circumstances I can imagine. And through it all he could’ve rejected God and no one would be surprised.

But he hasn’t rejected God. He’s grown closer to Him.

Jonathan has drawn closer to God than most people I’ve known. And he sees God in everything that happens.  And its affected his perspective.

Here’s and example of what I mean:

I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night and can’t sleep. My mind starts to run around like a chicken with a bad haircut and I try and try to go back to sleep. On my smartest nights – I sing songs of praise to Christ in my mind, or say Scripture over and over again until I fall back asleep. Seems like my favorite recently is Galatians 2:20. I’m sure you’ve had nights like that. I figure it’s the attack of the enemy to drive fear or worry or anxiety into my night and so (on my smart nights) I battle it with Scripture and praise. On my ignorant nights I toss and turn for a couple of hours.

My perspective: Something’s waking me up, but who knows what?

J & D. Not a great pic
except David’s
carrying Goliath’s head!!!!

Jonathan has a completely different perspective. When he wakes up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep, he’ll tell me “The Lord woke me up at 3 o’clock this morning.”

Understand – his waking up is the same as yours and mine. He doesn’t mean God called his name audibly, or shook him by the shoulders, or threw cold water on his face. He means he woke up, and worry began to creep in, or anxiety or fear or something like that.

So back to “God woke me up at 3 o’clock this morning.” Then he says “And He drove me to His Word. And He showed me this _____!” And then He tells me about some wonderful or encouraging truth that the Lord revealed to Him. Marvelous.

Whereas on my stupid nights I toss and turn, and on my best nights I sing praise or repeat Scripture, Jonathan knows that God is near so it must be God waking him, because the Creator, the God of universe has something to say. And He always speaks to His boy Jonathan. What a blessing.

And this same God wants to speak to you. God is here. Phil. 4:5 makes a powerful statement:

God is Near.

Like really near. Like “right here” near. As David (the big deal David) said: “If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.” Psalm 139. Everywhere you are, there He is. He’s here, He’s there, He’s in this, He’s in that, and He’s all around and He’s always speaking to His boys and girls – His precious children that He loves so much.

And He’s speaking to you and waking you up and putting you to sleep and He’s near to you.

And (read this slowly with your “this is profound voice”)…and He’s not going anywhere. He. Is. Near.

Be blessed,

Pastor David
