50 Shades of Grey, or Romance on the way to the Women’s Shelter

NOTE: Mature subject matter. Because the world is full of twisted people.

OK – so I hear about this new movie, Fifty Shades of Grey that all the hip cool moms can’t wait to see. I heard about it originally in 2012 from a post by a 20-something Christian blogger who writes about purity for young women. She was shocked that a bunch of self-professing Christian women were reading it.
Then a longtime friend/former church member tells me that her former BIBLE STUDY LEADER recommended the book Fifty Shades of Shackles to her.
I’m having a cow…sideways.

So let’s cut to the chase. Here are my top 4 reasons why this whole movie and book is a bad idea…especially for women.

 1. It’s about sadomasochism and bondage. That means its about:
a. one person (man) who is aroused by dominating, abusing, degrading and hurting another, and
b. another person (a woman) is aroused by being dominated, abused, degraded and hurt by another.
STOP. Read those last two sentences slowly. Let that sink in. It should mortify and horrify you.

It’s what turns on pedophiles, rapists and sick sick men who kidnap women and keep them chained up in the basement (like Ariel Castro). It’s what turns on men who kidnap young girls in Nepal and sell them into slavery in India. At it’s core it’s all about dominating and degrading a woman.

It’s what this woman experienced in real life – not a turn on: Real Life Anastasia Abused (click here for link).

Annnnnddddd…it’s what housewives have been reading and praising and apparently want to watch to celebrate love and Valentine’s Day. It would not be surprising to see a whole generation of young women who believe they were put on earth to be degraded by men. And a generation of men thinking that’s what women really want. That “no” really means “hurt me”.

2. It’s porn for women. Which is really remarkable in and of itself. Because porn hurts women and children. It’s primarily men who become porn addicts. Mostly men casting off wives and kids and risking it all to get what they can. Women who would get furious if their husband was watching porn are proudly professing they love this book and movie! This is what Women’s Lib has brought us? Equal opportunity relational destruction?
Don’t believe me? Read this article (regarding the book) – the guy doesn’t claim to be a Christian or care what God thinks. He’s just a regular guy not caught up in the hype. One Man’s Review: It’s All Porn To Me
Eph. 5:3 “Among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality…” And yes, a movie about  sadomasochism and bondage would be more than a hint – maybe a screaming neon sign of sexual immorality. It’s also bizarre. In a Fifty Shades of Deviancy way.
3. Like the Twilight series, it’s romance for stupid people. Quote from Anastasia – the woman in the book, to her abuser. She says “The physical pain you inflicted was not as bad as the pain of losing you.”
That quote (which I retrieved from an article – I haven’t read the book, just lots of reviews) is the kind of things women say right before they end up in the hospital or a battered women’s shelter. It’s painful and sick – not “sinfully wicked fiction.”  It’s a sign of someone who has lost touch with reality and desperately needs help.

4. It’s a lie. At the end, the woman Anastasia (which means “resurrection”) finds her salvation in submitting to the sadomasochist abuse of Christian (get the play on words?). In return she receives true love and caring from Christian.

What happens in real life with abusers? As already mentioned, the women end up in a hospital, a shelter, or a morgue. That’s the truth. But some women will believe the lie.

So that’s just 4 reasons that Fifty Shades of Grey is horribly degrading and debasing for women. 4 reasons Fifty Shades of Grey completely violates Christ’s plan.

This movie…bad plan.

But test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. I Thess. 5:21-22
