The title should COMPLETELY overshadow the way you view the world. Follow me here for a minute.
So Moses goes to look at the burning bush – it’s on fire and not burning up. Moses goes to see. And God calls out his name, tells him to take his shoes off. This is no pedestrian place; not a common area. Moses is in the presence of God.
And God says to Moses:
“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob.”
And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Exodus 3:6 (ESV)
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
My initial thought might be “I’ll never earn my way to God or heaven – I’m not Abraham, Isaac or Jacob. I’m no Moses! God would never use me!” Think about it: we’re pretty messed up right? I mean let’s be honest – just like me, you’ve got some ridiculous sin in your past. Maybe in your present. And God deals with giants of the faith like Moses, not common sinners like you and me.
Well, let’s consider that.
Abraham, not once, but twice makes Sarah (his wife) pose as his sister so they won’t kill him. And they believe Abraham – one a king and one a Pharaoh – and take her in because they think she’s hot and they want her
. And Abraham just lets it happen! God has to intervene. Just think about that…”Honey – you go with that man – I told him you’re my sister. Do whatever he wants. Because I don’t want him to punch me in the brain.” REALLY?? What kind of
man does that? Well…a girly man.
But that’s not the worst. God promises Abraham a son. Sarah is barren as a desert. So she says “Abraham – go have sex with my servant Hagar! Get her pregnant!” REALLY!?!?! What is that? Viva Las Vegas?!?!?!
Abraham’s son Isaac does the same “this is my sister not my wife” thing and the pagan king freaks out! He says “how could you lie like this?” It’s a bad deal when you supposedly know God, and someone who doesn’t know God calls you out.
Isaac’s son Jacob – bad as any of them – he’s a grifter, a con artist, a cheat and a liar. Steals from his own brother by lying to his father!
|“Sin as thick as tar.”
And get this – these are the patriarchs of our faith. The “grand” fathers of both Judaism and Christianity and their sin is as thick as tar. And yet God says “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” How can He be the God of such sinful guys?!?!?!?
1. If He was the God of the perfect people, He’d be the God of no one. He’s not the God of the perfect, the pristine, the flawless.
2. He IS the God of the hopeless sinner who KNOWS he or she has nothing to bring to the table with God, and who by faith, puts his or her faith in Christ. God’s got grace to use those who put their faith in Him. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and you.
You’re not good enough to get to God.
If you think you are, you’re self-righteous – which is even worse. Better yet – you’re too bad, too sinful, too far gone to get to God.
But God is good enough,
God is great enough,
God’s got GRACE enough,
to get to you.
God’s got grace to use you.
